Huge thanks to Judy for organizing, to Peter, Katherine, and Juanita for sharing the history and planting with the students, and to George Gabriel and Tom Phillips for giving us such a powerful story of how neighbors transformed and created this community space. 💚
Students also heard from Peter about native plants that sustain biodiversity and then rolled up their sleeves to add seasonal flowers, vegetables, and herbs to the garden. 🌼🌿
As an organization dedicated to cancer awareness, we also highlighted the importance of fresh, healthy eating and the role of green spaces in promoting wellness and environmental health in cities. 🌍💚

Continuing our sustainability journey with Columbia’s New Student Orientation Program, we explored the Julia Gabriel People’s Community Garden! 🌿✨ A huge thank you to Judy E. for organizing this enlightening tour. We learned about the garden’s fascinating history: neighbors transformed an abandoned lot into a lush community oasis and later rallied to save it and neighboring residential buildings from being replaced by a mega-nursing home. Tom P. shared how the community’s dedication preserved this green space, and we were honored to hear from Julia Gabriel’s late husband, George, about the first Earth Day celebration in the garden and his collaboration with the EPA to secure water hydrant privileges. 🌍💧 Here’s to celebrating and protecting our urban green spaces! 🌱💚 #CommunityGarden #UrbanEnvironmentalism #SustainableFuture #EarthDayHistory #GreenSpaces

Had a blast at Columbia University’s New Student Orientation with the Community Action, Responsibility, and Engagement (CARE) program! 🌟 We kicked off our sustainability service experience by turning old t-shirts into tote bags. It was all about the power of upcycling and extending the life of our clothes. Recently quite a few whales have been washing up on beaches throughout the Tri-State area. The most recent whale was found dead on Fire Island last week.

Neglecting to clean up after your dog is an environmental hazard on par with pesticides, according to the EPA. When left on the ground, dog waste washes into into water bodies and pollutes them. The EPA says, “the pathogens, disease-causing bacteria, and viruses, can also make loca waters unswimmable and unfishable, and have caused severe illness in humans.”

Cleaning up after your dog is the law and your responsibility as a pet owner.
